Groon (2010 Mix)

King Crimson
An alternative take of Groon
Groon was the B-side on the single of Cat Food from early 1970
Which we featured earlier in this series
It's an improvised instrumental based around the theme with which it begins and ends
Interestingly, it's always had a much higher profile than one might expect
For a conventional B-side
For example, the live band that toured in 1971 and 1972
To the best of my knowledge, never played Cat Food live
Whereas Groon was a regular feature of their set
Often sparking some of their best improvisations
Robert Fripp has also always included Groon in the major King Crimson compilations
Starting with the very first one, The Young Person's Guide to King Crimson from 1976
The official recording of Groon as used on that album
Is actually the sixth studio take with one small edit at the end
For this series, I suppose we could simply have used the complete version of that take
Including the few missing notes
But we can do much better than that
This is a complete different take, the last one we know of, which is take 15
So here it is, Robert Fripp, Michael Giles and Peter Giles playing Groon
An alternative take taken from The Sailors' Tales boxset in 2017
